Jorge Lopez says ‘worst team,’ Meltdown was Misinterpreted

Jorge Lopez, soon to be formerly of the New York Mets, has had an eventful 24 hours. Lopez set the baseball community on fire for an interview after the Mets’ latest loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday.

During Wednesday’s contest, Lopez, 31, only recorded one out, allowing a walk, and giving up a home run. Before May 24th Lopez was pitching rather well for New York with an ERA under 3. He argued with the third base umpire, leading to his ejection. He then tossed his glove into the crowd as he walked off the field.

Of course, in the controversial post-game interview. Lopez was quoted saying he was “on the worst team in the whole f****** MLB”. Since then the Mets have designated him for assignment, and Lopez has called out the media for misinterpreting his words.

It was true that the media ran with the sound bite at first, We can presume Lopez was referring to his play on the field instead of dunking on the New York Mets Organization.

Jorge Lopez is a former All-Star (2022) and has hopped from a few different teams since his days in Kansas City and found his best stretches with Baltimore. Notably, Lopez is from Puerto Rico, and assuming by the clip English is not his first language which has sparked a discussion as to why he was fielding questions without an interpreter present. Lopez did state that this was a mistake on his part.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s likely that reporters took Jorge Lopez’s comments out of context. Given the Mets’ struggles this season, it’s understandable that some might think Lopez was criticizing the team, a la Tommy Pham. But it’s more likely that Lopez was simply expressing frustration with his own performance.

Hopefully, this is not the last chance Lopez has in MLB because if what he says is true, it is most likely. The whole situation seems that it could have been an avoidable one whether the Mets wanted to move on from him or not.
