Jontay Porter pleads guilty to felony charges

Former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter has plead guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Due to be sentenced on Dec. 18, Porter could face a maximum of 20 years in prison.

According to an apologetic Porter, he engaged in this scheme to “get out from under large gambling debts.” He fully admitted to his participation in a conspiracy in which four other men are still being investigated, saying “I know what I did was wrong, unlawful, and I am deeply sorry.”

Despite the possibility of decades behind bars, experts believe that Porter will probably only see a few years of prison time. It is also likely he will be ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and penalties. Porter did not speak with the press following his statements, but did tell the court he is seeking rehabilitation for his gambling habits.

This is the latest development in a story that first broke back in March of this year. The NBA became aware of allegations that Jontay Porter had placed over a dozen bets on games he had influence over. Using a surrogate, Porter would place wagers on himself or the games he was playing in, then act to achieve his desired outcome. The sports betting service Porter used became suspicious of the bets, due to their outstanding payouts riding on a pretty obscure and low-level player.

Once the NBA was informed of the allegations, Porter was immediately suspended. He received a lifetime ban from the league in April.

Jontay Porter’s plea deal comes in the midst of legal trouble for other members of his family; Coban Porter, younger brother of both Jontay and Michael Porter Jr., was sentenced to six years in prison this year for killing a woman while drunk driving.
