Jonathan Toews Returns To NHL With Winnipeg Jets

Jonathan Toews is making his return to the NHL—and he’s coming home to do it.

The former Blackhawks captain and three-time Stanley Cup champion will sign with the Winnipeg Jets, marking a long-awaited comeback after sitting out the last two seasons due to lingering medical issues.

Now 37, Toews brings leadership, playoff pedigree, and a whole lot of pride to his hometown team. It’s a full-circle moment for one of hockey’s most respected veterans.

Many expected the former Conn Smythe winner to make a decision soon, and it’s exactly what happened. With his sensitive situation and advanced age, staying out west made lots of sense.

However, in his heyday, Toews was one of the best two-way centers around. He should fit in nicely on Winnipeg’s third line despite receiving offers from teams like the Avalanche, among others. Elliotte Friedman recently confirmed that it would be a homecoming for JT:

Still More To Give?

Make no mistake, the Jets are still trying to tread water in the Western Conference. Even if Connor Hellebuyck got a questionable nod for the Hart Trophy, he is still undoubtedly the best goalie in the game. Many forget that this team won the Presidents’ Trophy this season.

While he’s not the star he once was, a move like this is one that helps under the radar. Winnipeg still has a lot to do this offseason, with Nikolaj Ehlers at the top of their to-do list, with the winger heading for free agency. Kyle Connor is also out of contract next summer, so they must figure out whether to extend or trade him before it’s too late.

The Jets are still pushing to stay relevant in a crowded Western Conference, and bringing in a veteran like Jonathan Toews is a worthwhile gamble. While no one’s expecting him to be the player he once was, his presence in the locker room and on the ice could give Winnipeg the edge it’s been missing.

It’s a feel-good story, sure—but for the Jets, it might also be a quietly smart move.
