Jonathan Taylor, Colts agree to three-year, $42 million extension

The ongoing dispute between Jonathan Taylor and the Indianapolis Colts appears to be over. The two sides have agreed on a three-year extension worth $42 million, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport. The deal includes $26 million of guaranteed money.

This deal puts Taylor near the top of the NFL running back market. Taylor will be the sixth running back in the NFL with a contract that pays more than $10 million dollars annually. The $26 million guarantee in his deal is the second-highest number for a running back; Christian McCaffrey has a $30 million guarantee and is the RB with the most guaranteed cash.

Taylor’s extension with the Colts will keep him in Indianapolis through his age-27 season.

Taylor and the Colts failed to agree to contractual terms before the 2023 NFL Season began. Those struggles culminated in Taylor requesting a trade. A trade never came to fruition and the parties began negotiating again. The difference in opinion on running back value which fueled the animosity between the two parties was put aside to ensure Taylor would be paid handsomely.

Taylor was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform List and will be eligible to make his season debut in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans.

The Colts put themselves in a solid position amid Taylor’s absence. Indianapolis’ 2-2 record places them in the midst of the race to win the AFC South as all four teams sit with the same record. First-year head coach Shane Steichen and rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson have made massive impacts in their first year with the team. The return of an All-Pro running back will only help the Colts.
