Jonathan Quick Closing In On New York Rangers

Jonathan Quick is going to have a homecoming of sorts. The Connecticut native will look to sign with the New York Rangers at the start of free agency. The former Conn Smythe winner is set to serve as Igor Shesterkin‘s backup. Kevin Weekes broke the news on Twitter:

Quick is one of the most decorated active goalies. Along with the Conn Smythe in 2012, he won two Stanley Cups with the Kings and was with Vegas during this year’s triumph. He has also won the Jennings Award twice along with six Top-10 Vezina finishes. He came in the top five for voting three times and was the runner-up in 2012. The terms of the deal are yet to be announced but this addresses a major position of need for the Rangers.

First Order Of Business

It will be interesting to see how much of a hometown discount he takes considering New York’s cap situation. They have roughly $11.7 million in cap space with a bunch of free agents. Their all-in experiment failed in the first round. At the time of writing Vladimir Tarasenko is far more likely to return than Patrick Kane. To alleviate things one of the Rangers’ main offseason objectives should be finding a taker for Barclay Goodrow. The only issue is he’s owed $3.6 million for another four seasons along with a modified no-trade clause.

Their rivals already showed the price of getting out of a year and $5 million of cap is a future second-round pick. Chris Drury is gonna have to shoot 100% if he wants this offseason to be a success.

The New York Rangers have accomplished one of their main goals of finding a backup goaltender. Jonathan Quick is not the goalie he used to be but his experience is LA and Vegas could prove to be very important in the upcoming season.
