Jonathan Marchessault Hopes To Be A Golden Knight For Life

Did Jonathan Marchessault play his final game for the Vegas Golden Knights? The original misfit is scheduled to hit free agency this offseason for the first time during his tenure with the VGK. The Quebec City native spoke about what’s next following the season-ending loss in game 7 to the Stars.

“I’ve done everything I can to stay here,” Marchessault said during Tuesday’s end-of-season media session, per KTNV’s Nick Walters. “I know I’m a big part of the organization. I would love to stay. I was a part of the guys who started this, one of the most proud things in my life. I’m happy to be a Golden Knight and want to be one the rest of my life.”

This can be seen in the embed or by clicking this link, but I did a little offseason preview for the team already. To me, this offseason isn’t nearly as complicated as some are making it out to be. Vegas currently has $7.59 million in cap space. The idea that isn’t enough to keep Marchessault is Looney Tunes. In reality, it’s about making sure Marchessault and Chandler Stephenson are kept. The challenging part is how much money does it cost to keep both and who has to go in order to make that happen.

Few bullet points to close out the post.

  • Here is the VGK cap sheet for next year.
  • Keeping Marchessault and Stephenson are clearly the priorities.
  • Anthony Mantha is gone. Never understood that trade the moment it happened.
  • I’d imagine William Carrier is gone too. Paul Cotter is already the existing cheap option on the roster. Carrier is going to want a raise Vegas can’t afford and he’s not on the ice enough to warrant it.
  • One of three things will happen with Alec Martinez. He’s either going to retire, depart for bigger money elsewhere, or stay on a short term deal similar to what Mark Giordano did with the Leafs. We’ll obviously hope the latter is what occurs but who knows how likely that is.
  • I’d imagine the team would keep Michael Amadio if it’s something close to the minimum. Anything higher from another team and he’s probably gone. He had 27 points in 73 games for the team this past season. Certainly possible he stays with the team on the cheap. Has a decent defensive stick too.
  • Keep an eye on these names in order to open up cap space: Zach Whitecloud, Brett Howden, and Adin Hill. With the way these guys play defense, can you go cheaper in net? Bruce Cassidy always produces quality goalie play. Hill wasn’t viewed as anything when they acquired him and could probably flip him for more. Logan Thompson is more than fine as one half of the tandem. I’m just saying…
