Jon Jones and The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) have struggled to see eye-to-eye throughout the organization’s eight-year tenure with UFC. With the UFC and USADA ending their partnership, Jones would like to clean up some previous issues.
With USADA out of the picture, Jones wants his 2017 no-contest over Daniel Cormier reinstated as a victory.
“Man I survived USADA,” Jones said on X Wednesday evening. “First they said I was guilty of having picograms, then they considered me innocent, next picograms became legal. Guess what I’m still here, still unbeaten. That BS no contest over DC needs to be taken off my record. I’ve never cheated this sport and I will stand by that until the Day I die.”
In Jones’ second bout with Cormier, he won the bout the fight with a third-round knockout; however, the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) overturned the bout to a no-contest after USADA flagged Jones for failing a drug test.
Jones’ failed drug test became controversial because it was revealed that his failure stemmed from a small amount of turnibol. The amount was so inconsequential that USADA later changed its rules and increased the amount of turnibol that would be needed for a test to be deemed illegal. Under USADA’s new guidelines, Jones’ test would not have been deemed a failure.
Essentially, Jones wants the victory reinstated because the test would no longer be deemed a failure. It is unlikely that the CSAC would be willing to discuss a fight that happened over five years ago, but now is not a bad time for Jones to make his displeasure known.
It is difficult to blame Jones for pushing to get the Cormier victory back onto his record. That is an all-time win and a great resume builder. Thankfully for Jones, he is the undisputed GOAT and already has an outstanding resume.
Jones’ no-contest against Cormier may be controversial, but he also failed a different PED test. In 2016, he tested positive for clomiphene and Letrozol. The two are estrogen blockers and performing-enhancing drugs. Although, Jones claimed the substances were present because he ingested a contaminated sexual-enhancement pill.
All things considered, Jones has an argument that his no-contest should be a victory, but it is difficult for him to claim to have a PED-free career.
