UFC GOAT and current heavyweight champion Jon Jones has retired from MMA. Jones had a remarkable UFC tenure that spanned 17 years. In that time, he won 16 title fights and held gold in two weight classes.
In the wake of Jones’ retirement, interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall was elevated to undisputed champion.
UFC CEO Dana White announced Jones’ decision in his UFC Baku post-fight interview.
“Jon Jones called us last night and retired,” White said. “Jon Jones is officially retired. Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC.”
Jones’ retirement puts an end to one of the most contentious fight bookings in recent MMA history. In the aftermath of Jones’ UFC 309 title defense over Stipe Miocic, the hype for a potential booking against Aspinall was off the charts. It was one of the best fights that could be booked in the sport. White even predicted the fight would be the biggest heavyweight fight of all time.
Jones will have a complicated legacy. In the octagon, he saw unprecedented levels of success. He was the youngest UFC champion, holds the record for the most title wins, became a champion in two weight classes, and his only loss was a disqualification in the early stages of his career. All that being said, he has also had serious legal issues and a complicated history with failing PED tests. Now, his unwillingness to fight Aspinall may taint his legacy in the eyes of many.
The UFC will likely never see another fighter like Jon ‘Bones’ Jones. His mix of natural talent, success, accolades, and controversy helped him become one of the most polarizing fighters to ever step in the octagon. More importantly, he never suffered a legitimate defeat during his wild ride of a career.
