If you’re looking for early signs of a potential breakout player in the Ravens’ offense, all eyes should be on wide receiver Devontez Walker. He was selected by the Ravens in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He did not see the field a whole lot last year and was mainly a special-teams player. However, it appears Walker has caught the attention of head coach John Harbaugh during training camp. And when a coach of Harbaugh’s caliber speaks that highly of a player, it’s hard not to take notice.
The Ravens’ passing offense has never been their strong suit due to their heavy run-first style. However, last year, they struck gold and had one of the better air attacks in the league. Baltimore was getting brilliant quarterback play from Lamar Jackson, who came in second in MVP voting. Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman took steps forward as young wide receivers. Also, the Ravens got solid play out of their two tight ends Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely.
Now, the Ravens could be looking at another dynamic weapon in the passing game if Devontez Walker can continue to impress this offseason. He was drafted as a deep ball threat with blazing speed as he ran a 4.36 40-yard dash. John Harbaugh had good things to say about the second-year WR at the end of mini-camp.
“Every day, all he does is show up and go 100 miles an hour…He’s got a chance to be really good,” John Harbaugh said.
This type of praise can build some excitement for Walker as he tries to make a name for himself in this wide receiver room. Also, there could be some sleeper fantasy potential since every owner wants a piece of this high-powered Ravens’ offense.
The Ravens’ offense and Lamar Jackson are a big reason why they are among the favorites to win the AFC. Also, this is not even mentioning the talent they have been stacking up on defense. But Baltimore has the chance to improve on an already stellar 2024 offense attack in 2025.
With Lamar Jackson leading the charge and Monken’s system in place, Walker’s deep threat ability could help elevate Baltimore even more. There are a lot of sound bites that come out of OTA’s and minicamps so we will have to wait until closer to the season to see the reality of the situation. However, if Harbaugh is giving praise to a mainly special teams person, then it is best to keep an eye on Devontez Walker during training camp.
