John Gibson Traded To Detroit Red Wings

John Gibson trade rumors are like clockwork this time of year. However, there are no longer rumors. After years of rumblings, the Ducks are finally moving on from the former Jennings winner. It is none other than Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings that are adding the veteran goalie. Elliotte Friedman confirmed that a deal is in place:

Frank Seravalli confirmed that a second-rounder and fourth-rounder are part of the return. At the moment, Gibson is on a reasonable $6.4 million AAV for the next two seasons. While he’s not the player he once was he also has had next to no help in Anaheim as of late. He was one of the final pieces of the old guard that included Ryan Kesler, Corey Perry, and Ryan Getzlaf. A divorce was necessary this time around as he also lost the crease to Lukas Dostal during 2024-2025. Sitting through a rebuild and watching the team get worse year after year can’t be fun. What’s also not fun is trading sunny South California for the cold confines of Michigan.

He will have a better team playing in front of him, but he’s gotta show he still has something in the tanks. His numbers were not good, and they haven’t been for a while:

Final Phase Of The Yzerplan?

If this doesn’t pan out, this has gotta be the final straw for Yzerman in charge. When he first came in, he had a blank canvas of cap space, draft picks, and a growing prospect pool. Since then he’s taken the roster to their limit with crappy deals and blowing draft picks in deals like this. Not to mention a coaching carousel over the years. Even then they are still on the outside looking in for the playoffs.

What’s worse is their division is not slowing down. Montreal made a big swing with Noah Dobson yesterday. Florida will try to bring the band back together after extending Sam Bennett. Maybe the Leafs take a step back once Marner leaves but they should at least be a playoff team next season. If Detroit starts slow next season they will have to change something. Maybe it is in the front office instead of on the ice for once.

John Gibson is finally out of Anaheim. However, it is not a super major leap up with the Red Wings. He’s gotta show he still has some gas in the tank.
