It was revealed today that San Diego Padres Pitcher Joe Musgrove will undergo Tommy John surgery, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.
On Friday, Padres manager Mike Shildt announced that Musgrove would miss the entirety of the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers. A few hours later, Padres GM A.J. Preller revealed that Musgrove hurt his UCL and would need Tommy John, thus ending his season.
This certainly throws a wrench in the Padres rotation. San Diego will have to figure out what happens for game three and beyond, as Dylan Cease and Yu Darvish are reportedly starting Games 1 and 2.
This announcement came after Musgrove had to leave Game 2 of the wild-card series against the Atlanta Braves Wednesday because of elbow tightness. Musgrove, now 31, pitched just three and ⅔ innings in game two and gave up a hit and an earned run. He also had four strikeouts.
Joe Musgrove had been dealing with elbow issues all year and was on the injured list from late May through mid-August. He only pitched 99.2 innings throughout the regular season. In 19 starts, he posted a 3.88 ERA, 3.96 FIP, 1.17 WHIP and had 101 strikeouts.
Throughout his nine-year career, Joe Musgrove has a 66-62 record with a 3.73 ERA and 1,050 strikeouts. Before coming to the Padres, Musgrove also played for the Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates.
San Diego swept the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card round and is a serious contender to win this year’s World Series. It will be interesting to see how the Padres adapt to this new development and whether they allow this injury to slow down their momentum.
