Jimmy Butler wants you to know that he doesn’t like Dillon Brooks

The Golden State Warriors picked up a huge Game 4 win in their first-round series over the No. 2 Houston Rockets on Monday, taking a 3-1 series lead. A huge injection to the team’s life has been Jimmy Butler, who they acquired midseason from the Miami Heat.

Butler missed Game 3 with a pelvic contusion and got off to a slow start, but was ignited after trash-talking with Dilon Brooks at the free-throw line toward the tail-end of the second quarter. The 35-year-old committed a hard foul on Brooks in transition not long thereafter–and looked noticeably more energized throughout the second half, when scoring 23 of his 27 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

Butler was asked about the dispute after the game, and he was very candid about his feelings about Dillon Brooks.

“Get me on the record with this: I don’t like Dillon Brooks,” he said after Monday’s Game 4 win over Houston. “We’re never having fun. I’m a fierce competitor. He’s a fierce competitor, but there ain’t nothing fun about that.

I don’t think anybody is trying to be friends with anybody on either team, that’s for sure. Fun is winning. Fun is competing. And it’s going to be fun whenever we get four (wins).”

Brooks, 29, doesn’t have a great reputation around the league. Does he care? Absolutely not, but he’s not afraid to poke the bear as many times as he would like regardless of the consequences. On Monday, he poked the bear (Jimmy Butler), and it potentially cost Houston the series. Butler put the Warriors on his back down the stretch, which he’s oftentimes done when Stephen Curry isn’t involved.

Golden State is 25-8 when Butler, Curry and Draymond Green play, and now they’re one win away from a date with either the Minnesota Timberwolves or Los Angeles Lakers in the second round. Butler’s still not going to be fully healthy with his injury, but he will be motivated enough to bark at Brooks and back it up, potentially sending him home.
