We’ve heard from Doug Armstrong on why he made the coaching switch to Jim Montgomery. However, it’s a two way street and Montgomery certainly didn’t have to say yes to St. Louis.
Montgomery, 55, signed a five year contract with the Blues and called a return to St. Louis a ‘no-brainer’.
“Crazy! Crazy!” Montgomery said when asked to assess the past six days. “There’s no other word for it. A lot of emotions. I’m a firm believer that when one door closes, another one opens if you do the right thing.”
“I’ve worked with over half this lineup already, and I know how committed they are to playing the right way and the type of people they are,” he said. “For me, this was a no-brainer to be able to come back home and be a Blue again.”
Montgomery, the 2023 Jack Adams winner, spent 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons with St. Louis as an assistant coach. Clearly, it’s a spot he likes and is comfortable with. The only problem with the Blues is they’re not exactly a sexy free agent destination and the roster is very mid. Jordan Kyrou, Robert Thomas, Pavel Buchnevich, and a whole lot of nothing lumped on top. Monty will have his work cut out for him in order to get the Blues back in Stanley Cup contention.
The biggest boost Monty will give the Blues is likely on the offensive side of the puck where he helped the Bruins unleash their attack after wrongly firing Bruce Cassidy.
