It would appear that Aaron Rodgers has played his final game for the New York Jets. In a face to face meeting, Rodgers has been told that the franchise is moving on.
Jay Glazer over at Fox Sports has the scoop on this one.
Rodgers, 41, threw 28 touchdowns and 11 picks, which actually seems pretty good given the circumstances. When you fire your head coach, offensive coordinator, and promote someone who isn’t ready, the team is probably going to struggle. Rodgers clearly has lost a step and isn’t very mobile anymore but he’s definitely not to the point where he’s unplayable yet.
The Jets would take a $14 million cap hit in 2025, with $35 million deferred to 2026 if they release Rodgers this offseason. Based on this report, that seems to be the most likely path. The Jets have the 7th overall pick in the draft. It would appear that they plan on using Tyrod Taylor as the bridge quarterback so that they can hand the keys to whoever they draft next. Taylor is under contract for this year.
I can’t imagine someone is actually going to trade for Rodgers. Not after how this year went. It’s also possible Rodgers just retires. That can’t be ruled out. Otherwise, Rodgers will need to find another team this offseason if he wants to keep playing.
Ditto for Davante Adams who also appears likely to move on given that Rodgers won’t be playing for the Jets any longer.
