Jets Looking To Trade Nikolaj Ehlers?

Jets Looking To Trade Nikolaj Ehlers?

Nikolaj Ehlers has spent his entire career with the Jets but the Danish left winger could be on the move soon. Ehlers, 28, is set to enter the final season of his contract in 2024-25 which will pay him $6 million. The Jets could be looking to move on from Ehlers before he departs for nothing the following season.

The Athletic’s Murat Ates reports (don’t click the link it’s from that trash bag publication that forces you to pay to read. I’ll tell you all the information you need to know) that the Jets are looking to trade Ehlers. Ates lists the Hurricanes, Penguins, Red Wings, Sabres, Senators and NHL Utah as possibilities to land Ehlers.

Personally, I think that’s a mistake from the Jets. Yes, Ehlers’ offensive production has dipped a bit (0.74 points per game were his lowest since the 2018-19 season) but he’s still a really good player and will take off the second he leaves that irrelevant franchise. Ehlers’ +92 rating is the franchise record. He also posted great underlying numbers this year once again. In 2023-24, Ehlers posted 54.4 CF%. This is a player you better be very careful moving on from.

Sean Monahan and Tyler Toffoli are two other wingers that will hit the free agent market this offseason. Does a trade of Ehlers mean they plan to try to retain those other two?

I’d love to hear from you on this because I don’t get the point in dealing Ehlers. If you trade that guy why not just blow the whole thing up? They’re never winning the Cup with this core. The only reason they made it this far is because the Kings got conned into taking on the cancerous Pierre-Luc Dubois.
