The New York Jets fired their head coach and general manager midseason. So who will Woody Johnson hire to replace Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas? In a hilarious turn of events, Woody is entrusting a guy who he previously fired to run the head coach/gm search. No, that is not a joke. Instead of using the league office, Woody hired The 33rd Team to help with this process.
Adam Schefter was the first to report the news:
Okay, let’s talk about this. We aren’t going to ignore the fact that Tannenbaum was the GM from 2006-12? The Jets fired Tannenbaum after a 57-55 stint in New York. Eric Mangini and Rex Ryan were the coaches during that period of time.
It sure feels like this is Woody saying being mediocre is an upgrade over what Joe Douglas provided. Which I guess makes sense but also feels like a cry for help. Tannenbaum made like three good picks during his tenure (Brick Ferguson, Revis, and Mangold) if we’re being real about it.
There are two ways to look at this. Maybe Woody is trying to be creative. If you’re not on Jed Hughes list, you’re not getting an interview if you use the league office and there are a ton of politics involved with that. That’s the sad truth. At the same time, this sure feels like Tannenbaum will just hire himself and put Rex Ryan back in charge after no one with self pride would take that job after they gave away draft picks and got stuck with the washed version of Aaron Rodgers.
Side note: I always thought the marketing behind The 33rd Team sucked. What happens if the NFL expands to 34 teams (Which can’t be ruled out with the way the NHL is expanding)? You’re stuck with a URL and site that makes no sense but whatever. I’m sure the site will be bankrupt within a few years anyway. It’s usually what happens when ESPN digs their teeth into something.
