The New York Jets have fired general manager Joe Douglas after five-plus seasons with the organization, SNY’s Connor Hughes was among the first to report Tuesday.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets named former Browns general manager Phil Savage as the team’s interim general manager.
This news comes one month after the Jets parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh, signaling that there will be wholesale organizational changes heading into the 2025 season. The Jets failed to record a winning season under Douglas, who was hired in 2019 after being the vice president of player personnel in Philadelphia.
Douglas drafted Garrett Wilson, Sauce Gardner–who’s significantly underperformed this season–and Quinnen Williams. But he also had plenty of misses, including drafting Zach Wilson No. 2 overall. Douglas was also the one who hired Saleh, which never worked out.
Plus, he traded for Aaron Rodgers and found ways to acquire a few of his old friends, which also hasn’t worked. Your life as a general manager in the NFL won’t last long if you fail to find an answer behind center multiple times–regardless of how good or bad your drafts are.
Douglas’s tenure wasn’t successful, as he was in the last year of his current contract. Given the team’s start and the turmoil that surrounded the organization over the last several years, it wasn’t likely that he would be retained. I guess this buys them more time to see which candidates they want to consider heading into 2025.
