Jerry Jones reveals Cowboys ‘couldn’t afford’ Derrick Henry in free agency

Current Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry spends his offseasons training in Dallas, Texas, Ater the Dallas Cowboys let Pro Bowler Tony Pollard walk in free agency, Henry seemed like a natural fit for “America’s Team.”

On top of that, the star running back allegedly expressed interest in playing for Dallas, even though he claims they never reached out. After he ran all over the Dallas Cowboys Sunday, to the tune of 151 yards and two touchdowns, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that the reason Henry didn’t end up on the team was not because the Cowboys weren’t interested.

Rather, it was because of fiscal reasons.

”We couldn’t afford Derrick Henry,” Jones said Sunday, according to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk.

“I don’t know,” Jones added, when asked why he couldn’t afford him. “Why can’t you buy a mansion when you live in a different kind of house? We couldn’t afford it. We can’t make that all fit. That’s as simple as that.”

Why Didn’t They Have The Money?

With the Cowboys re-signing star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to a four-year, $136 million deal and re-signing quarterback Dak Prescott to a four-year, $240 million deal, they did not have much extra spending money.

Henry’s asking price was a two-year, $16 million contract, and the Cowboys didn’t have the wallet for him. For this reason, the team didn’t even attempt to pursue Henry, who, as previously stated, was interested in joining the squad. They simply couldn’t afford Derrick Henry. Instead, they chose to bring back former Cowboy Ezekiel Elliott to a one-year, $3 million deal.

This may not have been the best decision, as entering Week 3, the Cowboys ranked 25th in the NFL in rushing. It didn’t get better Sunday either, mustering up just 51 rushing yards to Baltimore’s 274 behind Henry and Lamar Jackson. The Cowboys’ leading rusher was Rico Dowdle, who had just 32 rushing yards on eight attempts.

The Dallas Cowboys may be in a little bit of trouble, as their supposedly great defense has gotten torched in back-to-back weeks, with the offense leading some to be desired as well. Although, they did end up making the game close in the end. If Dallas continues to struggle, don’t be surprised if Head Coach Mike McCarthy gets the boot. A Cowboy boot, if you will.
