In a wild turn of events, the Cubs have fired David Ross and hired Craig Counsell. I’m not sure anyone had that on their bingo card, but that’s exactly what happened. Counsell already did his best to explain his decision. Now it’s time for Jed Hoyer to do the same.
The Cubs GM said a lot of things in a recent post by ESPN. I’ll list a few of them below but feel free to read the full ESPN story for all of the details.
“It just felt like an exceptionally hard decision but one that I felt like I had to make if the opportunity was there,” Hoyer said. “My job is to figure out how to win as many games as we can in the short term and the long term, and there was nothing about this move that I felt like didn’t meet that criteria.”
“This is no knock on Rossy, who I think incredibly highly of, but Craig is at the very top of the game,” Hoyer said. “It’s hard to rank managers but he’s at the top of the game.”
“He’ll take his and beat yours and he’ll take yours and beat his,” Hoyer said. “Consistently, they’ve outperformed expectations.”
There you go. Translation: Hoyer doesn’t just think Counsell is a better manager than Ross. He thinks Counsell has turned the tide in the division. That Milwaukee wouldn’t have won the NL Central without him. He wants that guy on his side.
Time will tell if this proves to be a wise hire. My advice to Jed. Improve your roster or Counsell isn’t winning the division with your team.
