Is there even a spot for JD Davison on the Celtics roster? With Marcus Smart, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, and now Malcolm Brogdon on the roster, Davison will have to really grind to carve out minutes for himself in Boston. Davison doesn’t see any issue with that.
The former Alabama point guard says he’s ready-made and got that dog in him. Actually, I think he called himself a dog maybe 100 times during the presser after Summer League practice:
“When I got my name called by the Celtics, when my agent called me and said the Celtics got you, it was just like, you’re going to be in an organization where they win,” he said. “So it was just really important to where I know I can come in here and get better every day and just come here and win. I was very happy.”
“In Boston, you really gotta play defense. They’re one of, I think the best, defense in the league,” Davison added. “So you gotta come in here and be a dog. So I think I can help them improve on that and just be a dog on the defensive end.”
Davison, 19, averaged 8.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.3 assists as a freshman for the Crimson Tide. Davison appears to be a long term development option with so many vets on the roster. Someone who certainly has potential. Davison is a good athlete that can shoot with some extra leaping ability you maybe wouldn’t expect.
Boston also has another point guard Yam Madar who they also drafted in the second round currently playing overseas. The reports on Madar have been up and down but it’s also fair to question if Davison will ever get a real opportunity on this roster.
The good news is, of course, the veteran guards the C’s have on the roster right now is about as deep as it gets around the league. I can think of worse guys to learn from as a young guard like Davison trying to earn his spot in the league.
Thus far it appears that Trevion Williams, the former Purdue big man has been getting all the hype at practice. It wasn’t long ago that I wrote a post on Williams potentially becoming a factor with the Celtics. Check out some of these clips from practice. He’s been the talk of the town.
(If you click on the Forsberg tweet, good person to follow, there are two other videos he has posted in the thread).
Side Note: No idea if Davison makes it but that hair? Gotta boost his chances, right?
