Is Jazz Chisholm A Sensible Yankees Trade Target?

Jazz Chisholm is one of the current faces of a Miami Marlins nosedive.

After becoming a fun playoff team in 2023, they have regressed incredibly quickly into one of the worst teams in baseball. Naturally, they will be one of the definite sellers in what looks to be more and more of a bare trade market. As such, he is definitely one of the pieces expected to generate interest.

With the expanded format and so many teams in both the AL and NL in the race, no one really wants to call it quits on their season. That is, of course, unless you’re a bottom-feeder like Miami, Oakland or the White Sox. As the rumor mill keeps churning, one of the teams linked to the 2022 All-Star is the New York Yankees.

After a white-hot start through their first 70 games, the Bronx Bombers are currently in a free fall. They haven’t won a series or consecutive games in over a month. With each passing day it’s becoming more and more clear they need reinforcements before the July 30th trade deadline. So would the infielder-turned-outfielder make sense?

The Case For:

One of Chisholm’s main strengths is something this Yankees’ team sorely lacks: speed and athleticism. The Yanks’ fastest players are arguably Anthony Volpe or Alex Verdugo, who are league-average at best. It’s expected that any addition would replace either Gleyber Torres at second base or DJ LeMahieu at third, so moving Jazz to second is definitely a possibility.

With that speed in mind, he is also a sensible fit to leadoff for Aaron Boone‘s squad. A career .309 on-base percentage isn’t ideal, but this team needs a spark–someone who can get on for the big guns of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto is a must. Furthermore, he can steal bases, which is something this team has just about forgotten how to do in recent games.

He is also a reliable defender. Obviously, Jazz made his mark as a shortstop before moving into centerfield ahead of the 2023 season. This is a smaller point, but he is now healthy. Despite being in the 2022 All-Star Game, he played in only 60 games that season. The Yankees have seen infielders like LeMahieu and Anthony Rizzo routinely miss time, and, thus create inconsistency in their play.

At 26-years-old, he still has time to develop and fit into the Yankees’ timeline as they try to become a legitimate contender in the American League once again.

The Case Against:

The unfortunate truth is that inside a Yankees locker room is where some concerns about this deal arise. Obviously, there are rules in place like no facial hair and the requirement of keeping your hair short and clean-shaven. Even though “The Boss” George Steinbrenner passed away years ago, the traditions he enforced still remain. On the field, a player like Jazz Chisholm could give this team and lineup the exact jolt they need to rediscover their early season form.

However, some had concerns when Brian Cashman brought in names like Verdugo and Marcus Stroman during the offseasons. At face value, their personalities are not exactly the most compatible with what everyone views the Yankees as. To this point, they have just about gotten along with their new teammates just fine. Even though they’re in a rough patch, we at least publicly know nothing of any real acrimony. If the team has discussed Jazz, they definitely see a fit so it’s now wait-and-see time.

Jazz Chisholm has shown the enticing potential of being a superstar in the modern MLB. Unfortunately, the Marlins are not trending in the right direction so a change of scenery is exactly what he needs.
