Jaylen Waddle and Tua Tagovailoa are arguably one of the best young QB-WR duos in the NFL today. Now the former Alabama wide receiver is crediting his young-found success to his quarterback.
“His ball placement. I think everybody sees it, knowing exactly where to place the ball so his receivers can not just catch it, but catch it and run with it. That’s what makes Tua, Tua,” Waddle said.
Waddle and Tagovailoa have a history behind their connection. The duo has now played two seasons in the NFL together with the Miami Dolphins, but it goes back further. The Miami duo played for the Alabama Crimson Tide together, forming a college connection under head coach Nick Saban.
“It’s great,” Waddle said. “Tua’s a great guy. We’ve got years in with us playing together, so it’s always good being familiar with your quarterback, from the college game to the NFL game. It’s like riding a bike, getting back playing with him. It’s fun. You don’t have to learn quarterback tendencies when you’ve already played with him.”
Waddle became a standout receiver in only his first year with the Crimson Tide. Although Waddle played well in his first season, injuries slowly broke him down. The now 24-year-old receiver fractured his ankle on October 19th, 2020, in a win over Tennessee.
He would miss seven games that season, though one injury held Waddle back, his draft stock didn’t take a hit. Miami would eventually select him with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, and the rest is history.
Waddle and Tagovailoa are now heading into their third season together in the NFL, and their connection is only getting stronger. Be on the lookout for a Crimson Tide take over next season.
