Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks as a whole are in a weird spot. After falling in the play-in, the ping pong balls magically bounced their way. They are weeks away from presumably taking Cooper Flagg first overall in this year’s draft. However, with a roster in limbo, is a new voice needed?
That might be the case whether they like it or not. The New York Knicks, home of former Mavs guard Jalen Brunson, fired veteran coach Tom Thibodeau yesterday. Leon Rose and Co. are conducting a wide and comprehensive search, scouting candidates in both the pros and college. However, Kidd is reportedly on their radar. Steve Popper of Newsday wrote a piece outlining where things stand at the moment:
“The one name I keep hearing is Jason Kidd — under contract in Dallas, but intriguing with the Knicks already importing much of the Mavs training staff and Jalen Brunson having already played for Kidd, as well as Kidd having played for the Knicks.”
With Kyrie Irving already out for all of 2025-2026, and Anthony Davis’ health anything but a sure bet, the Mavs might need to get younger with Flagg presumably at the forefront. Brunson’s prior relationship with Kidd might play a major role in how this plays out. You’d have to think his father Rick, will remain on the staff of whoever gets hired. As well, it’s hard not to assume that the Hall of Famer did not want Luka Doncic traded if he had his way.
His coaching style also has results – Dallas was Western Conference champs in 2024 with the Doncic-Irving backcourt. Even if he is under contract, it seems a given that New York will at least ask for permission to speak with him. Being the head coach at Madison Square Garden is a tall task for anyone. However, he was a fan favorite on Broadway when he spent the twilight of his career there.
Daniel Gafford and Derrick Lively shined in that 2024 playoff run. Kidd’s ability to coach centers would translate nicely with Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson under contract. As one of the best pick-and-roll maestros in recent memory, is that really a surprise?
Obviously, Leon Rose and the New York Knicks have a major decision to make at the start of their offseason. Don’t be surprised if Jason Kidd is in the mix to become head coach, assuming Nico Harrison and the Mavericks don’t get in their way.
