The Dallas Mavericks have signed head coach Jason Kidd to a multi-year extension, the team announced Monday morning.
As of the time of this publishing, there are no additional details on the length nor compensation of Kidd’s new contract.
“We are excited to have Coach Kidd continue to lead our team throughout the coming years with this well-earned contract extension,” Patrick Dumont, the team’s governor, said via statement. “Kidd led our team to two playoff appearances in three seasons, and we are looking forward to his leadership in continuing to build and grow this already great franchise.”
This extension comes days after the Los Angeles Lakers, who fired head coach Darvin Ham Friday, had reported interest in nabbing the 51-year-old head coach.
Kidd has gone 140-106 (.569) in three seasons with the franchise, including two 50-win seasons in 2021-22 (his first year) and this last season. Dallas was the No. 8 offense and No. 18 defense this season, though those marks buoyed to No. 7 and No. 13 after the All-Star break, respectively. Even in the final calendar month of the season, Dallas sported the league’s second-best defense despite showcasing a bottom-third offense.
Luka Doncic had arguably the best season of his career and Kyrie Irving superseded expectations alongside Doncic. The midseason infusion of P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford helped, but Kidd helped put them in positions to succeed alongside Dallas’ dynamic backcourt.
“I have known Jason for a long time, and I cannot think of a better, more qualified candidate to lead this team going forward,” Nico Harrison, Mavericks general manager, said via statement. “As a former NBA Champion Hall of Fame player, Jason brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role which cannot be duplicated. He has earned the trust and respect of our players and that of so many across the league, and I look forward to working alongside him as we continue to build upon the culture and foundation of success he’s helped foster throughout his tenure as head coach.”
The Mavericks downed the Paul George-led Los Angeles Clippers in the first round and will take on the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semis.
