Jared Cannonier calls for a rematch after his TKO loss to Nassourdine Imavov at UFC Louisville. In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Jared Cannonier tells him he wants the rematch against Nassourdine Imavov in September during UFC Paris. The interview took place on Ariel Helwani’s podcast, TheMMAHour.
The rush for a rematch from Cannonier comes after the controversial stoppage during the main event of UFC Louisville on ESPN: Cannonier vs. Imavov. During the fifth round, referee Jason Herzog called the fight after Imavov hit Cannonier with multiple shots and had him against the fence. Herzog responded to the backlash on X. The post was later deleted.
Cannonier called the early stoppage “Gut-Wrenching” and went to to say that “The opportunity to do great things was pretty much stolen from me.”
After an 18-month layoff and 10 years fighting in the octagon, this early stoppage could put Jared Cannonier’s career as a fighter in jeopardy. At 40 years old, Cannonier may only have just one or two more fights left. Although, Cannonier often disputes his age being an issue but the truth is he only has so many years left. This loss, after coming back from a long layoff, could mean Cannonier only has a handful of fights left before retirement.
Despite the backlash from fans, there is a positive to all of this. If Imavov accepts this rematch there will be much more for each of them to prove. Jared Cannonier will be aiming to disprove the previous results and Imavov could be solidifying himself as a force to be reckoned with, not just a supposed fluke-win.
