Ja’Marr Chase is one of the best young wide receivers in the NFL after a fantastic rookie season in 2021. However, his Pro Bowl season did not seem to impress Electronic Arts, the creators of Madden. Every year Madden gives NFL players a rating from 1 to 100 and the Madden 23 ratings were just released. According to the game, Chase is an 87 overall, which would make him the 20th best wide receiver in the league.
Chase was not happy with his rating, but gave a professional respone:
Chase’s retort to his rating was fair as he tallied 81 receptions, 1455 yards, and 13 touchdowns in his first year with the Cincinnati Bengals. These are incredible stats for any wide receiver — let alone a rookie. It would be hard to name 12 wide receivers better than Chase so the fact that Madden was able to name 19 is astounding to me. However, Chase took the low rating on the chin, and he seemed fine with idea of working harder knowing his rating will be higher in the next Madden.
Tom Brady has had his share of battles and disrespectful ratings by the Madden creators. Brady was not always in the G.O.A.T conversation. In fact, he was another nameless backup earlier in his career, so much so that Madden did not put him in the game.
Brady offered kind words for Chase sharing his own funny Madden story where he was not in the game in his second year, instead registered as “QB No. 12” for the New England Patriots. The game even went as far as to rank Brady a 57 overall with an insanely low 41 awareness.
The Madden ratings are always fun to discuss when they are released each year, even if they are not the most accurate. However, the Madden developers adjust the ratings throughout the year so it will be interesting to see how Brady and Chase progress throughout the season.
