Jalen Hurts Still Beats Himself Up Over Fumble in Super Bowl

In Super Bowl LVII, the Chiefs and Eagles’ battle for the ages came down to the wire. Jalen Hurts had a stellar performance, passing for 304 yards and one touchdown, and rushing for 70 yards and three touchdowns, a Super Bowl record for quarterbacks. He would have undoubtedly been given Super Bowl MVP if the Eagles prevailed.

Despite that, Hurts still struggles with himself fumbling in the second quarter.

I always hold myself to a very high standard in everything I do,” the 24-year-old said after the loss. “Obviously, I try to control the things I can. I touch the ball on every play. I want to protect it. It hurt us. You never know what play it will be.”

Eagles center Jason Kelce defended his quarterback in an interview with JAKIB Sports.

When you’re the guy — when you’re Jalen Hurts — I know the way he thinks, because we’ve talked about it, he still beats himself up for this play and that play,” Kelce said, via Yahoo Sports. “I’m like, ‘Dude, you had the best performance ever for a quarterback in the history of the Super Bowl. You did just fine.

Kelce was fielding a question about the terrible field conditions in Glendale.

Players from both the Eagles and Chiefs struggled to get traction on the natural grass and slipped many times. At least half a dozen Eagles players switched cleats during the first half in an attempt to get a better grip, including Hurts.

The reality is when you’re that guy, when you’re really a competitor, you think you control stuff,” Kelce said. “You don’t want to acknowledge that somebody else — a field, officials — because once you start doing that, you start devaluing who you are and who we are.”

The Eagles’ only turnover of the postseason was returned 36 yards for a touchdown by Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton, shifting the game’s momentum.

Even after the turnover, the Eagles offense still went on to put up 21 more points, but unfortunately their top-tier defense crumbled. The Chiefs erased a 24-14 halftime deficit by scoring 24 points in the second half, including 17 in the fourth quarter to win 38-35.

Not up to our standards. I feel like we got a little uncharacteristic on a lot of things. I got to hand it to them, they did a good job. We just didn’t come up when it mattered. We had a shot,” Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat told USA TODAY Sports following the loss.

Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million extension this offseason and is looking to bring home the Lombardi Trophy in 2024.
