Jake Oettinger, Stars Agree To Mega Contract Extension

The goalie market can’t be stopped in the early portion of the 2024-25 NHL Season. Linus Ullmark, Joey Daccord, and Jeremy Swayman all recently agreed to contract extensions with their respective teams. Jake Oettinger will now join that group as he’s on the verge of agreeing to a new deal with the Dallas Stars.

Elliotte Friedman over at Sportsnet was the first to report the news. The deal is expected to be in the neighborhood of the $8.25 million AAV that Swayman signed for.

It turns out, Oettinger will sign the EXACT same deal that Swayman did. Frank Seravalli had that news. It is, however, worth noting that the contract Oettinger signs will be in tax-free Texas, which obviously makes a bit of a difference.

Oettinger, 25, has emerged as one of the best goalies in the league. He’s also off to a hot start this season winning all three starts with a .948 SV%. The former Boston University product sports a lifetime 116-48-23 record with a SV% of .914.

Jim Nill Deserves More Credit For The Stars 2017 NHL Draft

This is great work by Jim Nill and the rest of the front office in Dallas. You could make the argument that Oettinger deserved more money than Swayman based on his resume. To get him signed now for that price with the way the cap is going up, it’s a huge win for Dallas. I’m not sure how anyone interprets it any other way.

Now we all wait for what this means in terms of Igor Shesterkin and his impending free agency…
