Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey will be out indefinitely after breaking his left fibula, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Thursday.
The injury occurred during the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s game against the Orlando Magic. Both Ivey and Magic guard Cole Anthony were going after a loose ball and Anthony collided with Ivey’s left knee. The third-year guard was carted off on a stretcher.
The team announced Thursday that Ivey underwent a successful procedure, where he will be re-evaluated in four weeks, according to Keith Langlois of Pistons.com.
Ivey, who turns 23-years-old on Feb. 13, was in the midst of a career season with Detroit. Through 30 games, he was averaging 17.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists on 46.0 percent shooting, including 40.9 percent from 3-point range on 5.1 attempts and 73.3 percent from the free-throw line.
He showed legit growth as an offensive player with his efficiency alongside Cade Cunningham. Though he’s more of a combo guard instead of a primary initiator in a slender 6-foot-4 frame.
This is a still a huge bummer for Ivey and Detroit Pistons, who officially surpassed last year’s win total on Wednesday with their 15th win of the season. They are now only three games below .500 and in the thick of the play-in race in the Eastern Conference.
Now it will be time for Marcus Sasser, who’s averaging 5.9 point in 13.1 minutes per game, to step up. They will also need additional contributions from Simone Fontecchio, Ron Holland and Wendell Moore Jr., among others.
