Noah Syndergaard was pissed that Jacob deGrom wasn’t extended by the Mets. Well, he may want to collect his commission check because deGrom just got his money. The Mets ace will sign deGrom is a massive extension that will keep him in Queens for the foreseeable future.
Jeff Passan of ESPN had the details that will be listed below:
deGrom is probably the best pitcher in baseball so this payday was well deserved. deGrom, 30, won the Cy Young award in 2018 after pitching towards a ridiculous 1.70 ERA in 32 starts. The guy was essentially unhittable and frankly won every single time the Mets gave him any run support.
Jacob deGrom made 32 starts this year. 8 of those starts he didn’t allow a run. 10 starts he allowed 1 run. 5 starts he allowed 2 runs. 8 starts he allowed 3 runs. 1 start he allowed 4 runs. That was the most he allowed in any start! It’s crazy how good this guy is.
The Mets did have 2 more years of control over deGrom but the high arbitration numbers to come would have made things really difficult. The Mets know that they also control Noah Syndergaard for 3 more years. That’s a winning start to any team. The Mets offense just has to be better in 2019 and they can absolutely win the NL East. Will they? That’s another story.
March has become a frenzy for extensions. Justin Verlander, Blake Snell, Luis Severino, Paul Goldschmidt, and Chris Sale all signed deals to stay with their incumbent organizations. With deGrom’s former agent serving as the Mets current gm (Brodie Van Wagenen) the safe money is the two would come together to get this deal done.
