Jackson Jobe to Undergo Tommy John Surgery, Potentially Out Until 2027

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jackson Jobe will undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the remainder of the 2025 season, casting yet another shadow over Detroit’s long rebuild that was finally breaking out into a playoff window.

Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press was one of the first to break the news on the young right-hander. Jobe is also expected to miss most if not all of the 2026 season as well.

Jobe, the third overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, showed enormous potential through the minor leagues. The Tigers called him up last year at age 21 at the end of the season, and he came into 2025 as a member of their rotation.

He wasn’t dominant, producing a 4.22 ERA, 17.9 percent strikeout rate, and 12.4 percent walk in 10 starts. Jobe also had 39 strikeouts and a 5.11 FIP as well. But Jobe is only 22 years old and has a power fastball/slider combo that propelled him so high in rankings.

At the same time, this is a brutal blow for the Tigers’ development. While Jobe’s age gives him time, this was supposed to be the year he took that big rookie step. If Jobe is out until 2027, that’ll also be two years of service time the Tigers are losing out on a potential ace.

The Tigers have been one of the best stories in baseball this season. They sit in first place in the AL Central with a 44-25 record and the fourth-best ERA in MLB (3.26). Behind guys like Tarik Skubal and Jack Flaherty, Jobe was in line to add to an already dominant rotation.

Elbow injuries suck, man. It’s happening to pitchers younger and younger. Whether you argue it’s the pitch clock or throwing too hard, it’s happening too often in today’s game. Hoping Jobe can come back strong after his recovery.
