Jack Leiter, the son of MLB great Al Leiter, may soon find himself in very similar shoes to his father. At just the young age of 20, Leiter is taking the NCAA by storm. Leiter who finds himself competing in a very strong Vanderbilt rotation, has shown his ability to dominate opposing batters with his smoldering fastball along with his highly developed off speed pitches.
Standing at 6’0 and weighing 195 lbs, Jack Leiter is not known for being a very big kid. Those assumptions seem to disappear when he hits the mound. In 51 innings, Leiter has only allowed a .70 ERA with an astounding 81 strikeouts. He has also demonstrated great command walking only 21 total batters in his two years with the Commodores. On the mound, Leiter has been seen to top his fastball off around 100 MPH but seems to usually fall in the 92-96 MPH range. He has also added a deadly curveball to his arsenal that has been measured to have almost 10 inches of vertical drop.
When it comes to Leiter’s draft stock, it is no surprise that many feel he will join teammate Kumar Rocker within the top 10 picks. The 2021 MLB Draft class is looking to be a strong one and many feel that Leiter could find a home with teams such as the Detroit Tigers or the Texas Rangers. In hindsight, both of these teams are in desperate need of pitching and a player like Leiter could be the star they need. After being drafted by the New York Yankees in 2019, Leiter may now find himself on a team with lesser talent. This would give him the opportunity to shine.
The future for Jack Leiter is bright. The young star has proven his ability to pitch at the next level and will soon be given the chance. With a strong finish to his sophomore season, Leiter’s draft stock will begin to rise and his chances of being a lottery pick will increase. Although Leiter may not be the #1 pick, his overpowering fastball and great command of his off speed pitches makes him a nightmare for hitters.
