Jack Campbell looks to improve poor play in 2023-24
After a very poor 2022-23 season, second-year Edmonton Oilers goaltender Jack Campbell looks to improve on his play this upcoming season.
During the 2022-23 season, all eyes were on Campbell. Edmonton has struggled with goaltending in the past few seasons–leading to the signing of Campbell in the offseason. However, not all went to plan for him in Edmonton during his first season there.
Campbell’s job would be slowly washed out by Stuart Skinner. Although both goalies started a similar amount of games, it was Skinner who started in the net during the playoffs.
Campbell, 31, would finish his debut season in Edmonton with career lows as a mainstream starter, almost all across the board. He saved 88.8 percent of shots coming his way and surrendered 3.41 goals against average in 36 games (34 starts).
Although Jack Campbell’s season may have been arguably the worst of his career, the Michigan-born goaltender is looking up toward the 2023-24 campaign.
“I just learned so much last year, my standard for myself is so much higher than that,” he said Wednesday, per TSN. “Not to dwell on it, but so much good came from having such a tough year as far as my growth this summer. My focus is getting back to where I know I can be at and even elevating that from what I’ve done in the past.
“(I’m) just really excited for the opportunity to write a new script this year … Just going out and having some fun, doing what I can do. It was nice to get a taste of it, but (it’s a) pretty small sample. I’m ready to turn it into something bigger this year.”
