Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady has taken a vague leave of absence from training camp. That’s not a huge deal considering Brady is the GOAT and can do pretty much whatever he wants. The Buccaneers approved his absence (and Antonio Brown did not.) It all basically amounted to a non-story.
Until recently, that is, when Reddit user CANN0NFIRE posited the theory that Brady is gone because he is a contestant on ‘The Masked Singer.’ The full thread can be read here. I’ll summarize the main points.
‘The Masked Singer’ is all about secrecy. Contestants’ identities are kept private throughout the course of the season. Tom Brady’s mysterious absence could be due to having to sign an NDA to be on the show and not spoil the surprise. The Redditor also hypothesized that Brady agreed to be a contestant during his brief retirement and it remained an obligation after he rejoined the Buccaneers.
Furthermore, Brady has already signed a deal to be an analyst for FOX once he retires ‘The Masked Singer’ is a FOX program. Previous FOX analyst Joe Buck was a contestant just last season.
Finally, the filming dates for ‘The Masked Singer’ conveniently line up with Brady’s leave. One of the filming sessions went from August 12-20. Brady initially missed practice on August 11 and will be away from the team at least through the Buccaneers’ preseason game versus the Titans on August 20. Given that Tom Brady could make it to the finale of the show, his return date is still being considered indefinite. Interesting!
The theory is so thorough that I wouldn’t be shocked if it came out as true. Season 8 of ‘The Masked Singer’ premieres on September 21 on FOX. Guess we’ll have to wait and see if Brady makes an appearance.
