Immaculate Grid Acquired by Sports Reference

Immaculate Grid, everyone’s favorite MLB trivia game, has been acquired by Sports Reference. Created by software engineer Brian Minter, the game launched back in April. It has since exploded in popularity with more than 100,000 daily players on the website.

For those unfamiliar with the game, here’s how it works. Each day, users get nine guesses to fill nine squares with any player from baseball history. As long as that player meets the two qualifications needed for that square, it keeps the immaculate grid alive. A percentage score indicates how common a given answer is, incentivizing users to come up with obscure picks. The lower the rarity score, the more impressive the grid.

The news release from Sports Reference read in part:

“This unique opportunity and acquisition for Sports Reference is the company’s first venture into expanding its websites to have playable content. With over one million users a day, Baseball Reference hopes to drive new traffic to the game, and vice versa. Moving forward, the Immaculate Grid game will now be integrated into Baseball-Reference.com, enticing players to dive down the rabbit hole of the site and learn more about players, teams, and statistics.”

New Owners = New Features

Sports Reference has already added a new feature to the game, offering a link to all possible answers for each square via Baseball Reference.

Sean Forman, President of Sports Reference LLC, had this to say:

“Brian has built an incredibly engaging game that has attracted hundreds of thousands of fans. I’ve spent many mornings scouring the recesses of my brain looking for that one player who played for both the Phillies and the Padres. We are excited Brian reached out to us about expanding his game to additional sports. Many on our team have been active players of the game for months now, and we are excited to bring it to all of our sites. I can assure fans of the game, we aren’t looking to change what makes the game great.”

Apparently, the plan is for Sports Reference to expand Minter’s idea to other sports.

Today was Immaculate Grid 100 and as of this writing my rarity score totaled 151. Five of my answers had a score below 10%. See if you can beat it!
