Let’s just get the facts out of the way first with this one. Craig Breslow already admitted he didn’t shop Rafael Devers before he traded him to the Giants. That also means he never called Dave Dombrowski to see what he would have been willing to offer. Breslow should have been fired well before the Devers trade, but this is another unforgivable sin to add to the list.
Just disgusting negligence, and there’s no argument. Nobody actually likes the return the Giants forked over in this trade. It’s obvious what happened here. Breslow looked for a team who was willing to eat the contract, and when the Giants showed a willingness to do so, a deal got worked out.
Dombrowski beats that offer, and I’m not sure it’s disputable. Keep in mind, Dombrowski has been unafraid to trade prospects forever. He’s never been a guy who hoards prospects. Dombrowski drew the line in the sand by including Devers in any Chris Sale trade when Boston acquired him years ago.
If Dombrowski was unwilling to trade Devers when he ran the show in Boston as an unproven prospect, what do you think he would have given up as an established big leaguer?
With the Phillies in first place and gearing up for another potential World Series run, the fact that a phone call was never made tells you everything you need to know about what’s going on here. Breslow should have had the keys taken away a long time ago. I’d argue this key detail alone is so unforgivable, I can’t believe Breslow is allowed to continue working and didn’t get sent to prison.
