The UFC Kansas City main event features a new matchup. The original main event between Jamahal Hill and Khalil Rountree has been canceled because of injury. The UFC filled the empty headline position with a welterweight matchup between Ian Machado Garry and Carlos Prates. UFC CEO Dana White announced the news on Instagram Live.
UFC Kansas City will take place at the T-Mobile Center on April 26.
This bout came together perfectly for Prates. ‘The Nightmare’ was originally scheduled to fight Geoff Neal on April 12 at UFC 314. That bout fell apart because of an injury to Neal. Now, he gets a higher-ranked opponent with two extra weeks to prepare. Meanwhile, Machado Garry is taking this fight on short notice. It does not mean he was not training; however, he did not a publically announced bout.
Machado Garry, 27, will be looking to get back in the win column after suffering the first loss of his professional career. At UFC 310, he took a short-notice bout against Shavkat Rakhmonov in hopes of earning a title opportunity. It was not a poor performance from Machado Garry, but Rakhmonov was rightfully given the decision victory.
Prates, 31, has been on an absurd run since signing with the UFC. In his promotional tenure, he is 4-0, with each win coming in brutal knockout fashion. That said, a fight against Machado Garry aggressively pushes him up the welterweight ladder and provides him with a difficult challenge.
The winner of this freshly booked UFC Kansas City main event will put themselves in a great position. The division currently has a few fighters working towards a title fight, and the winner will add themself to that list.
