Hunter Dickinson suggests NIL played a role in transferring to Kansas

Hunter Dickinson was the biggest name in the transfer portal in the 2023 offseason. The former Michigan star decided to leave Ann Arbor and transfer to Kansas. Dickinson has now provided more insight into his decision while explaining how name, image, and likeness (NIL) money affected his decision.

Dickinson spoke about his recent transfer on the “Barstool RoundBall Podcast.”

One of the reasons that Dickinson opted to leave Michigan was because of his NIL situation.

“The people hating on me would leave their job right now for a $10,000 increase,” Dickinson said. “I got, at Michigan, less than six figures. I got less than six figures at Michigan for the year.”

In 2022-23, Dickinson averaged 18.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, earning consensus All-American honors. Although, Michigan struggled as a team. The Wolverines missed the NCAA Tournament despite having a talented roster. Those struggles certainly affected Dickinson’s NIL potential.

Dickinson added that leaving Michigan was not an easy choice because of the legacy he built at the university. The decision to leave was largely centered around what would be best for Dickinson’s career.

“I still do love Michigan,” Dickinson said. “I still love the school and everything. I love the program. That’s why it was so hard to leave because I really didn’t want to leave, I didn’t. But I just felt like, man, it was the best decision for me. It took a lot of courage. I don’t think people realize how much courage it took for a guy who was there for three years, an All-American for the team. I did have a legacy there and I basically gave that up to try to be selfish and do what’s best for me and my career, not what’s best for anybody else’s career.”

Dickinson will certainly be on a better team entering the 2023-24 College Basketball Season as Kansas undoubtedly looks to be in a much better position than Michigan. The Jayhawks were one of the top teams in the country last season as they entered the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed. Despite an early exit in the tournament, Kansas is set up for success this upcoming year. Kansas will return starters Dajuan Harris and KJ Adams Jr. Alongside Dickinson, they will also be adding five-star recruit, Elmarko Jackson.
