Brock Lesnar is one of the biggest names in WWE today, and according to Hulk Hogan, the promotion has him to thank for this.
Lesnar is one of the few pro wrestlers to successfully compete in both pro wrestling and MMA. The star was first signed to WWE in 2000 and spent a few years in their developmental promotion FCW. In March 2002, he made a dominating debut in WWE and would go on to be one of the promotion’s biggest stars. Hulk Hogan was similarly one of the biggest names of his era and a pop culture icon, but did their paths really cross?
During his recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Hulk Hogan touched on his history with Brock Lesnar. The Hulkster claimed that WWE specifically asked him to work with Lesnar before bringing him into the promotion.
“I got him first when he came back from the UFC,” Hogan said. “I was kind of winding down putting guys over and doing my thing and Vince goes, ‘I want you to work with Brock.’ I went, ‘Okay.’ We kept an eye on him, you know, but when he came back from UFC, they gave him to me first and he was really intense, brother. He was really intense.”

Since his interview went viral, many fans took to social media to point out some inconsistencies with the story Hulk Hogan told. According to WWE themselves, Brock Lesnar was scouted by Gerald Briscoe and then-Talent Relations Jim Ross. While some fans used the clip to call the 70-year-old a liar, some have defended him and noted that it was a memory slip. Lesnar also notably only went to the UFC in 2007, and clashed with Hogan in 2002.
Substance abuse was rife amongst pro wrestlers during the 80s and 90s and has taken the lives of many stars in the industry. Hulk Hogan has had his fair share of controversies and struggles over the years, but his opioid addiction was new. During an interview with Muscle and Health, The Hulkster revealed how serious it became.
“I had doctors writing me prescription after prescription, and all of a sudden, it became a vicious cycle. I was hitting the pain pills hard because I’d had to endure twenty-five procedures. There was a period of time, about five or six years ago, where I was in crazy pain to the extent I couldn’t even function,” Hogan said. “It got to a point where I’d recovered from the tenth back surgery, and the pharmacy would call me and say, ‘Your prescription’s ready,’ and like a dog chasing a bone, I’d go pick it up.”
The 70-year-old eventually realized he had a serious problem, and began to use CBD instead. Since then, Hulk Hogan claims his health has only improved and so has his mobility. His experience with CBD even led to him launching his own health and wellness brand under CarmaHoldCo.
