Casuals probably don’t know who Hudson Card is, but that’s okay. We’re starting out the 2025 NFL Draft profiles this year with the lesser-known names who didn’t get invited to the Combine. That doesn’t mean the Purdue quarterback isn’t worth talking about cause he’s very much part of this QB class. Let’s get right into things.
Card, a four-star recruit during the 2020 recruiting class was invited to the Elite 11 and was part of that CJ Stroud, Bryce Young, etc QB grouping. He was listed under the duel-threat category and wasn’t exactly a statue. Point being, Card wasn’t exactly viewed as a scrub coming out of high school and Texas doesn’t recruit players with horrible recruiting profiles.
This is basically the timeline on Card:
2020: Redshirts behind Sam Ehlinger.
2021: Casey Thompson is the primary starter but Card gets some playing time and kinda flashes doing so posting a 5-1 TD to INT ratio.
2022: Quinn Ewers shows up and immediately swipes the starting job. However, as Ewers usually does, he gets banged up and Card once again shows flashes as a backup posting a 6-1 TD to INT ratio completing over 69% on 108 attempts.
2023: He realizes he’s never going to get the starting job and transfers to Purdue. He performs like trash posting a 15-8 TD to INT ratio with 58.9% completion while starting basically the entire season.
2024: Same thing happens except he looks worse with no real progress being made. A 9-7 TD to INT ratio making a bulk of the starts is so damn bad regardless of who you play for. 6.6 yards per attempt was virtually identical to the season prior. Same with the completion percentage. He just never got better and the rushing stuff totally evaporated at the end of his career.
Was this a product of Purdue just sucking or is Card just a nothing talent? Apparently, it didn’t impress anyone enough to earn a Combine invite when Matt Corral is out there throwing because they don’t have enough bodies. That says a lot. Still, there are times he looks good throwing the ball. Has some size on him at 6-foot-3, and it’s not like he has dreadful pure-arm talent. In fact, I’d argue his pure arm is better than several in the class including that bum Will Howard.
No combine invite either for Card. To me, he looks like one of these quarterbacks from the state of Texas who have some gunslinger in them but the range of talent on this one feels far less than Baker Mayfield or even Case Keenum.
Card is an undrafted player for me and probably everyone else but don’t be surprised if you watch a random preseason game and he’s on a roster. As in roster, I mean short term but still.
