How Does Craig Breslow View, Vaughn Grissom?

Vaughn Grissom is the return that Boston got back in the Chris Sale trade. Now that Grissom is with the Red Sox, how does Craig Breslow envision him fitting onto the roster? Well, Breslow answered that very question when he spoke to reporters following the aftermath of the deal.

“Dynamic athlete who can play all over the field, offers versatility,” Breslow told reporters after the trade on Saturday, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive. “… (Grissom) is most likely to settle in at second base. Really strong right-handed bat, elite performer in the minor leagues and has six years of control.”

It sure sounds like Grissom is the plan at second base now. Trevor Story will play shortstop again in 2024. The Sox also have a glut of middle infielders that they will need to figure out what to do with. What happens when guys like Marcelo Mayer force their way onto the roster?

Translation… Don’t be surprised if the next move is moving a bat for pitching.

Breslow also talked about what it meant to move a guy like Sale. Given what Sale has meant to the organization, there is definitely some emotion involved.

“Anytime you trade someone like Sale who has made such a meaningful contribution, it’s a really, really tough decision,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told reporters after the trade, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive. “… It’s something I was very mindful of. In the end, I felt like this was a decision that was best for the Red Sox.”

“He was quite appreciative and understanding of the position and the opportunity to influence the longer-term outlook of this team and the chance to go to a team that’s likely to compete for a World Series championship in the (National League),” Breslow added, per Cotillo.”
