How Does Brayan Bello Feel About An Early Extension With Boston?
Brayan Bello is a total stud and if the Red Sox are smart they will get a contract extension done ASAP. The same goes for Triston Casas but that’s a story for another day. Reports have surfaced that the Red Sox are indeed trying to get a lengthy contract extension done for the Domincan-born starter. Is this something that can actually get done?
If you ask Bello, it sounds like he seems very receptive to an extension and has made it clear that he would love to stay in Boston for a long time.
VIA Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic (Do not click. It’s behind a paywall.):
“I do want to stay here long-term,” Bello told McCaffrey, through translator Daveson Perez, in a story published Monday. “This is the organization that gave me a chance to be somebody so I’d love to stay here.”
“If (the Red Sox) did speak to my representatives I don’t know, because I told them if there are any extension talks I don’t want to hear about it in-season, because I want to focus on finishing my season good so that good things can happen for me,” Bello said through his translator.
Pull out the green check mark for Trey as my prediction has come through. Prior to the season, I listed Bello as the breakout star for the Red Sox. That’s exactly what has transpired in 2023. Bello, 24, sports a WAR of 3.0 and ERA of 3.14 across 15 big league starts. Bello has posted an ERA+ of 149 and looks like a future ace every time he takes the mound. The Sox have finally found a homegrown pitcher to smile about.
We know how this stuff goes. The longer you wait, the more the price tag goes up. The more years of free agency the Red Sox can buy out now, the better it will be for them down the road. If an extension is possible, it needs to be the first order of business this offseason.
