Houston Texans Training Camp 2024 Preview

This Houston Texans team was so much fun to watch last year. They’re super young and electric to watch, that also describes CJ Stroud, the best QB out of the 2023 NFL Draft class. After going 10-7 and winning a playoff game. The Texans will continue to build on that as they try to play in a competitive AFC South and frankly a competitive AFC. I think their ceiling might be about 12 or 13 wins and the floor is 10 wins. They’re that good and I can’t emphasize enough how young they are and how they will be getting better every year.

Three Position Battles To Watch

WR: Stefon Diggs vs. Tank Dell vs. Noah Brown vs. Nico Collins vs. John Metchie III vs. Robert Woods vs. Xavier Hutchinson vs. Ben Skowronek

This WR room is enough to make a QB fantasize about throwing 50 passes a game and having 100% completion rate. Not only are most of these guys are young, but they can play too. Nico Collins was a 1000 yard WR last year. Diggs is aging but can still be a WR1. The rest of these guys are young and hungry (except Robert Woods). I listed 8 WRs and I think the Texans take about 6 of them. I would say Diggs, Nico, and Tank Dell are safe. Metchie III was a 2nd round pick, so he should be safe. The real battle is to make the roster out of these 4 guys: Noah Brown, Robert Woods, Xavier Hutchinson, and Ben Skowronek. My pick? I think Robert Woods (age and injuries) and Ben Skowronek get cut. If you haven’t caught on yet, CJ Stroud is a must-have for fantasy this season.

CB2: Jeff Okudah vs. CJ Henderson vs. Kamari Lassiter,

What a fantastic group of CBs to go against each other in this Texans training camp preview. Both Okudah and Henderson were top 10 picks in the 2020 NFL draft. Kamari Lassiter was a 2nd round pick in this draft. These are some young guys that can play. This doesn’t even mention Derek Stingley Jr. either, who has the top CB spot solidified. There’s only one CB spot on the other side of Stingley Jr. to start. It is possible that one of these guys also start at nickel corner too. However, this CB room could be a nasty young group for years to come.

Left Guard: Kenyon Green vs. Kendrick Green

Kenyon Green’s spot is in trouble, whether it be injuries or just lackluster play, his spot is not safe for the Texans training camp. The person who probably threatens it the most is Kendrick Green. Right now, Kendrick Green is listed as the backup for RG but he definitely could go to the LG spot and challenge Kenyon Green for the spot. Kenyon Green SHOULD win the starting spot, but if he gets injured or Kendrick Green really impresses, it might be bleak for him.

Ready To Breakout: Tank Dell

It might be hard to classify this as a breakout, but remember that Tank Dell only played 11 games last year for the Houston Texans, but his impact was immediately felt on the field when he was on. You’ll almost excited to see what he can do in a full season with Stroud and now Stefon Diggs in the mix? It’s a nightmare for defenses. I love Tank Dell for fantasy for what it is worth. Be ready for the full Tank Dell breakout.

Rookie To Watch: Kamari Lassiter

As mentioned earlier in the position battle for CB2, Kamari Lassiter is in an interesting spot. The CB room for the Texans is stout and he’s part of that reason. He can flat-out play and it will be intriguing to see how he fits with the Texans. He’s against 2 young top-10 draft picks in Okudah and Henderson. He needs to make the most out of his reps and will be watched closely.

Fantasy Sleeper: Brevin Jordan

You just keep waiting for Brevin Jordan to prove you right as a fantasy sleeper. The last few years, this was a guy you could take a flier on and hope that he produces. It hasn’t happen yet but I am once again hoping that it comes to fruition. Brevin Jordan has a well-passing attack around him along with CJ Stroud who seems to be a stud already. Brevin Jordan should find himself open often and could be a Red-Zone threat for the Texans. You might want to take a late-round flier on him.

The goal for the Houston Texans is to grow off last year, grow from 10-7, and hopefully get another playoff win. Of course, they would love to win the Super Bowl, much like everyone else. They’re still very young and that inexperience might be their downfall, however, if they can stay poised, who knows what this team could do.
