Rockets trade Cam Whitmore to Wizards

The Houston Rockets traded Cam Whitmore to the Washington Wizards in exchange for two second-round picks, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Saturday.

After adding Kevin Durant and Dorian Finney-Smith while rewarding Jabari Smith Jr. with a five-year extension, time was running out for Whitmore in Houston. The Rockets also re-signed Jeff Green and Jae’Sean Tate this offseason. He was stuck in a log-jam with no conceivable path for consistent playing time.

Whitmore, who turns 21-years-old this week, had an abbreviated role in Houston each of his first two seasons. In 98 combined games, he averaged 10.8 points on 44.9 percent shooting, including 35.7 percent from 3-point range on 4.1 triple tries per game. His playing time dipped to 16.2 minutes per game in 2024-25, a number that would’ve likely gone down with the infusion of both Durant and Finney-Smith, barring injury.

He will be extension-eligible next offseason, so it was smart business by the Rockets to sell him now if they weren’t going to pay him, even though they’re selling low. At some point, they had to consolidate. Whitmore still has raw potential, but still has plenty of room to grow as a ball-handler, playmaker or defender.

When Whitmore was drafted No. 20 overall in 2023, Whitmore, viewed as a consensus top-10 prospect, was viewed as perhaps the steal of the draft. But it never worked for him under Ime Udoka. Now, he joins a fun young core in Washington alongside Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Tre Johnson and Bub Carrington, among others. He’ll add much-needed shooting and could carve out a role as he continues to develop and mature as a player.
