Astros top prospect Cam Smith will make 2025 MLB Opening Day roster

Houston Astros top prospect Cam Smith will make the Opening Day roster ahead of the 2025 MLB Season, Chandler Rome of The Athletic was among the first to report Tuesday.

The 22-year-old was one of the top pieces in the return of the Kyle Tucker trade in December five months after the Chicago Cubs drafted him No. 14 overall in the 2024 MLB Draft.

Currently the Astros’ top prospect and the No. 58 prospect in MLB (according to MLB Pipeline), Smith’s only played 32 combined games across Single-A, High-A and Double-A. So his sample of production is very limited. He mashed across all three levels, combining to sport a .313/.396/.609 slash line with seven home runs, 24 RBIs, five doubles and four triples in just 134 plate appearances.

He parlayed that with an excellent spring. Of course, Spring Training stats aren’t anywhere near being an end-all, be-all projection, but he sported a 1.129 OPS with four homers and 11 RBIs in just 43 plate appearances.

Smith will be playing out of position. Coming into baseball as a third baseman, he is expected to play some right field–Tucker’s former position–with Isaac Paredes (also included in that trade) manning 3B. Obviously, they wanted to find a way to get the top prospect into the lineup–and potentially unearthing some versatility around the diamond could make him a more valuable player in the future if he finds success.

Overall, this was a very cool moment for the 22-year-old. He can mash, but I’m excited to see how he puts his tools together over an extended sample at the MLB level.
