In the UFC 316 main event, Sean O’Malley lost to a bantamweight title fight against Merab Dvalishvili for the second consecutive fight. That left many questioning who the former champion will fight next. Henry Cejudo quickly answered that question as he called out O’Malley.
Cejudo called out O’Malley on X after UFC 316.
“Hey Sean,” Cejudo wrote. “You should’ve stroked the cord before the fight and let your wife’s bf record it. Anyways, I’m still looking for a tune up. Siblings fight all the time – Let’s give Merab a Father’s Day present he will never forget. What do you say precious?”
Cejudo’s callout of O’Malley comes with a slight amount of surprise. The former two-division champion has been contemplating retirement after dealing with a serious eye poke in a loss to Song Yadong. His callout of O’Malley suggests he is not ready to walk away from the sport.
If Cejudo fights again, a bout against O’Malley makes a level of sense. On the Cejudo side of things, fighting a former champion has to be more interesting than fighting another young prospect. Meanwhile, O’Malley can find value in taking out an opponent like Cejudo. That is a solid first step in working his way back toward the title picture.
A matchup between Cejudo and O’Malley should draw interest from fans. It is a fresh matchup that makes sense for both fighters. Additionally, the build-up between the two would certainly feature some trash talk.
