The Cavs were eliminated by the Celtics in five games during the Eastern Conference semis. As soon as Cleveland departed the playoffs, it felt like the drama hit instantly. The leaks in the building starting happening and the reporters were gifted a ton of toxic information. In the case of Donovan Mitchell, the good news is Cleveland fans might not have seen the last of him.
According to Shams Charania, Joe Vardon and Jason Lloyd of The Athletic (don’t click the link it’s by the scumbags at The Athletic where you have to pay to read) there is “growing sentiment” Mitchell will sign a contract extension with the Cavs. That would require the former Louisville product to decline his $37.1 million player option for 2025/26. A new extension for Mitchell would projected to be a four year deal worth upwards of $200+ million.
However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows in Cleveland. The tea leaves suggest that Mitchell and Darius Garland either hate each other or have decided they can’t coexist together. It was reported in the post that Rich Paul, “would have a conversation with Cavs officials on potentially finding a new home for the one-time All-Star.”.
Translation… if and when this new Mitchell deal gets done… Garland could be on the move. Matt Hanifan actually just covered this in a post that was recently published.
Mitchell, 27, averaged 26.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.8 steals per game during his second season with the Cavaliers.
