Green Hell Gameplay Review

Unforgiving Just Like Your Ex

Green Hell is a game I’ve heard about for some time. Initially released in 2019, it has built a huge following and continuously has updates which bring new aspects to the game. I am happy to say that I am a massive fan of this game.

Story

The story mode for Green Hell works as an early tutorial that slowly introduces you to the basic mechanics of the game. You and your significant other travel to the Amazon to make contact with an indigenous tribe. To make a long story short, your GF goes missing and it is up to you to survive and find out what happened to her. There are angry jaguars, venomous snakes, and numerous other perils awaiting as you explore the jungle to try and make it to the next day.

Gameplay

When I said the early game serves as a basic tutorial, that was an understatement. The game really throws you into the fire with no real handholding. Some might find this frustrating, but it fits with the idea that you have to figure out how to survive. You must find clean water, make fires, build up your camp, and explore in order to sustain yourself.

Like most survival games, you need to eat and drink to survive. Green Hell takes it a step forward by dividing up your nutrients into macro counting. You have hydration, fats, protein, and carbs. A severe deficiency in any one of these can lead to difficulty performing simple tasks — or death. There is plenty of vegetation to pick from, but eating too much, or drinking bad water, will give you parasites. Thankfully, there are specific types of mushrooms that cure parasites. In a pinch, having these mushrooms allows you to drink bad water or contaminated food if you are far away from camp or in a tight spot.

I have two saves that I played with, one in story mode and one in survival. Survival is fun because I was able to experiment on what to make and how to identify plants, I needed to craft things like bandages and other items needed to survive. I found the coconut to be the most versatile tool in the game. You can drink the water for hydration, eat the meat for carbs, and you can turn the shell into a sort of canteen to carry water, or break it in half to use as bowls. The coconut halves can be used to boil water to make it clean, cook soups, or set them outside and collect clean rainwater.

You Don’t Win, You Just Do a Little Better Each Time

Green Hell is not for the faint of heart. I would 100% recommend players new to the genre put it on the easiest mode possible and work their way up from there. Accept the fact you will die — it’s the best way to learn. Once you get the hang of the game, you will be able to explore the amazing world presented before you. I can’t wait to hop back in and continue my survival save and see what I can really accomplish.

Verdict: 9.1
