You may have come across clips of a player returning to face their former team and getting a tribute video played in their honor. Typically the player in question will have spent many years with the team or contributed to a championship during their time there. Prior to the 2023-24 season, forward Grant Williams was dealt from the Boston Celtics to the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team sign-and-trade deal. He was then moved to Charlotte at the trade deadline as part of a package for P.J. Washington. In a recent appearance on FanDuel’s Run It Back, Williams expressed his disappointment for not receiving a tribute video from Boston when he returned to TD Garden back in April.
“It definitely sucked because it would’ve been cool to see the highlights and the highs that we had throughout that team.”
Williams may have clarified that he did not necessarily expect a tribute video after Robert Williams III didn’t get one (but the audio cuts out and it’s hard to tell if he did or did not expect it to happen). Previously, Marcus Smart and Malcolm Brogdon had returned to play Boston and received a tribute.
Tribute videos are nice, but the bottom line is that not everyone deserves one. Grant Williams contributed to some very good Celtics teams. However, he averaged just 6.2 points per game in Boston and did not win a championship during his time there. He was a solid role player, but there is definitely a higher threshold for what is tribute-worthy.
Williams just completed the first year of his four-year, $53 million contract. He averaged 10.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 2023-24 across his time with both Dallas and Charlotte.
