Charlotte Hornets forward Grant Williams has torn his ACL in his right knee and will miss the rest of the 2024-25 season, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Sunday.
Williams was injured during Saturday night’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks. He injured his right knee after driving to the basket against center Brook Lopez. In 32 minutes, he tallied eight points on 2-of-6 shooting with seven rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal.
For the season, the sixth-year forward has averaged 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 steals in 29.9 minutes per game, shooting 43.9 percent from the floor and 36.5 percent from 3-point range.
Amid the recent injury to Nick Richards plus Mark Williams, Williams has operated as one of Charlotte’s small-ball 5s–in addition to Taj Gibson and Moussa Diabate. He’s also been one of the team’s primary veteran leaders for one of the youngest NBA teams; some may consider him goofy or annoying, but his voice in that locker room matters to head coach Charles Lee and Co.
It’s unclear whether or not Williams will need to require surgery. This is the first major knee injury of his professional career, and compounds to the injuries they already have in the frontcourt. Williams has never missed more than nine games in a single season prior to 2024-25.
